Perennial forage and permanent cover plays an important role in sustaining the environment. Check out this link to Canada's Green Cover Program for information about how to improve your grassland-management practices, protect water quality, reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, and enhance biodiversity and wildlife habitat.

A national program, Greencover Canada focuses on four components:

• Land conversion – converting environmentally sensitive land to perennial cover
• Critical areas – managing agricultural land near water
• Technical assistance – helping producers adopt beneficial management practices
• Shelterbelts – planting trees on agricultural land

Who can participate?
You are eligible for the program if:

• you are a registered land owner
• your land meets program criteria for environmental sensitivity*
• you agree to seed approved perennial plants**
• you enter into a 10-year land-use agreement

*Your proposal will be assessed under a farmland-specific environmental sensitivity index. Soil quality, air quality, landscape drainage, proximity to water, wildlife habitat and biodiversity ratings will be prioritized for funding purposes.

**Trees and shrubs must be long-lived and adapted to the area. Tame and native forages require Certificate of Analysis (minimum standard is Canada Common #1) and meet standards for weeds, quality, seeding rate and method.

SHORT-TERM ROTATIONAL CROPS (ie: alfalfa for dehydration) ARE NOT ELIGIBLE
PRODUCTION OF FORAGE SEED IS NOT AN ELIGIBLE PROGRAM ACTIVITY

What lands are eligible?
To qualify under this program, your land must:

• have been in annual crop production as of July 1,2002
• have severe limitations for growing annual crops
• have the potential for severe degradation (soil erosion, salinization, etc.)

ESTABLISHED FORAGE STANDS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE UNDER GREENCOVER CANADA

What funding is available?

If your application is approved, you will receive 2 one-time payments:
1. $20 per acre for seeding or planting tame forages or trees, or $75 per acre for seeding or planting native species; and
2. $25 per acre after you establish the perennial cover, after Greencover Canada inspects it, and after you sign the 10-year land-use agreement.

FUNDS RECEIVED FOR SEEDING ARE REPAYABLE IF LAND-USE AGREEMENT IS NOT SIGNED
